SPRINGFIELD
Community At-A-Glance
Among other notable Springfield names, W. H. Peters of Trumbull County, Ohio
came with his parents to Sarpy County in 1856. In 1879, he purchased 80
acres at $8 per acre, where he built the home now occupied by the William
Beck family. That home was finished when Springfield was one year old.
A number of business enterprises had sprung up by 1900. Two buildings were
the pride of the town — the large hotel owned by the Biakewell family,
and the Opera House.
Today Springfield’s locations on developing Highway 50 and the establishment of several art-based industries have provided a niche market for the community. City leaders are embracing this market, and have created special art districts to encourage future growth in this area.
Business At-A-Glance
Springfield is home to an eclectic mix of businesses including Soaring Wings
Vineyard, Springcreek Gardens, Springfield State Bank, Weiss Sculpture
Garden and Springfield Drug with its original soda fountain. The City of
Springfield has also opened its arms to developing arts community with
the establishment of an Arts and Tourism district. Springfield also has
a unique and quaint downtown area to attract future businesses and traveling
customers, and the widening of Highway 50 will offer prime locations for
more businesses to establish themselves in this expanding community.
